Select ‘Regional & Accessibility

click on keyboard layout

click on the ‘Xbd Options’ tab, then scroll down the list to: Compose key position. Make sure that Compose Key Position is checked. Now go down and check either right or left Win-key is compose. This will now enable functionality for the windows key, which otherwise isn’t used in linux/kde for much.

You have now enabled a key to control the creation of special characters, and you create those by doing the following:

Hit the windows key you selected, right or left one, one time, do not keep it depressed, then use the following combinations, after you release the windows key:

So tonight I came upstairs in response to the door bell to find an officer waiting for me. Uh oh.
Apparently they had recieved a call that had originated from our home line. Neither me nor my brother recall dialing 911, of course, so we check out the phone. Nothing strange there. The house’s security system seemed to be alright. Everything seemed to be OK.
So the officer got my name and my birth date, talked to my dad over the phone, and left. He was a nice guy, everything was pretty smooth. Of course the situation left me kind of freaked out, not to mention embrassed.
Later, my brother noted that he had found the phone on the floor. I’d guess that somebody (or the dog) stepped on the phone or something, dialing the magical 9-1-1 sequence. Lovely.

I haven’t posted here in awhile, so I’ve got quite a few things that I need to write about. First and foremost…

Ken Saltrick
Funny thing about Ken is that I used to like him, and my friend Nolan did not. Now the tables have turned. Nolan likes Ken, but I do not. There are a few reasons why I dislike Ken, but right now I’ll just bring up the highlights.

Ken is somewhat of a drama queen. We’ll be sitting and talking, someone will make a joke directed at Ken, and the scene will be set. He’ll start saying things somewhat like

They’re just words to you, but you don’t know how they make me feel!

or

You don’t know what it’s been like lately,

which brings me to another one of my highlights.

Ken likes to make excuses. When he has an outburst (such as the example above), it’s often followed up with an excuse later on.

Sorry guys, I was pissy last night because I had a hard time with my girlfriend

or something of the like. He doesn’t seem to understand that the world and all the things that exist on it do not (or should not) take that much responsibility for his behavior. Of course there are special cases, but he uses excuses like these way too often.

Another thing that annoys me about Ken is that he loves to whine. This somewhat integrates with my first highlight, but it’s independent enough to warrant it’s own category.
Whenever something goes slightly wrong in the world of Ken, he whines. A lot. For example, a long time (maybe a few weeks) ago, Ken, Hayden, Nathan and I were playing Tribes 2 Construction. Hayden decided to whip out the ELF gun (which has been removed from the server since then) and began killing everybody continuously and instantly. You see, this version of the Electron Flux Whip gun auto-locks on to people within maybe 30-50 meters of you, and kills you almost instantaneously. So Nathan and I decided to deal with it, and started to set up defenses against it (by now it was turning into somewhat of a game). Ken, however, sat and whined.

Oh my god, Hayden, that’s so cheap, stop it!

I hope you die in a fire!

Stop or I’m going to quit, I’m serious!

Which brings me to yet another one of my Ken Saltrick highlights.

Rage-Quitting. Ken loves to practice this (not so) popular game strategy. He even makes fun of himself sometimes for doing it. Throughout my lovely time spent with Ken, I’ve witnessed many a rage-quit, from Starcraft to Tribes 2 to Skype itself. He does it all the time, and it’s annoying of course, as it should be if someone decides to quit a game right before it’s over. It’s childish, annoying, and a poor decision.

And now for a perfect example, interweaving all of these characteristics into one little nutshell for you readers to enjoy.
Last night, I was talking with Ken, Hayden, and Daemien in a Skype conversation whilst playing a little of my favorite game, Tribes 2. Ken and Daemien are playing a game of Supreme Commander, myself overhearing their conversation. Ken is obviously getting massacred by Daemien from what I can hear, and decide I’m going to contribute to the action.

Sounds like Daemien’s owning you up, Ken.

Hayden and myself start to give him comments like this one, and all of a sudden he explodes. It was quite a silent explosion, actually, as he muted his microphone for some reason and was talking to Daemien purely through text-chat. Daemien gave us the gist of things, and it kind of went like this.

I hate this game, I’m so horrible at it. I’m probably going to uninstall it.
(artist’s interpretation)

I laugh, warn the silent Ken that if he’s not going to talk then I’m going to kick him from the conversation. A few minutes later, I do just that. I’m not so surprised to find that a few minutes later, he has blocked my Skype name. I block his, just in case he comes back and whines some more. Daemien ends up blocking him as well, and a few minutes later Hayden receives some messages from Kenneth.

I’m uninstalling Skype.

Was the gist of things from what I heard. Of course I didn’t mind, but Hayden seemed somewhat worried.

The next day I was told that Ken claimed that he was just

Pissy last night

and that he didn’t really mean anything.

Yeah, right.

In my last post (from quite awhile ago) I stated I was working on a clone of a past student server project.
Well, I’ve completed it. It’s called SServ, and it’s located at http://sserv.org. Not as many people as I would’ve liked have registered yet… but we’ll see how it progresses.
Right now I’m working on an add-on to SServ called SAud. Kind of a lame name, but whatever. It’s a place where you can submit songs, and listen to them in a flash-based player. It supports MP3 only, which makes all of the iTunes users sad, but MP3 just plain rocks. Anyway, the basics of the site have already been completed, some things I’d like to do with it are…

Add a rating system

Add an account system where you can put favorites, show your submissions, etc.

Add a comment system

Add a search system (this should be pretty easy)

Some more stuff that I haven’t thought of yet.

So, yeah. It’s pretty cool I think that I’m able to make stuff like this now. PHP rocks the socks. Majorly. It allows for highly interactive sites on all levels. The only thing that can surpass it right now (in my mind) is Flash, which I’m not too great at.

Anyway, on to the next subject.

People at my school don’t know how to make websites. Unless you’re talking about MySpace or something, they have no idea what HTML, PHP, Flash, or anything is. So I really want to do an after school web design class. I think it’d be fun for me to teach other people what I’ve learned, and I think it’d be fun to see the ideas and creations other people get out of it. It might even spawn a big group project to create a website, who knows.
But yeah, I’m going to either e-mail the principal tonight or talk to him tomorrow about my idea, since I think it’d be great fun.

Next subject.

The machines forum seems like it’s actually pulling itself together, now. We’ve got a new section for M2 Development progress only, no ideas or messing around. Just work on the new version. We’re also gathering a team for a newsletter we’re going to send out every week or so about the happenings of WiredforWar. It may attract some old members back, and keep current members up to date and participating on all of the subjects being discussed at WiredforWar.org. I hope it goes well, because it’d be great if our site were to get a little bit more active and popular.

That’s all for now. Hope I remember to post again soon…
